January is always a quiet time and provides the perfect opportunity to catch up on maintenance and makeover work. Last year we made some upgrades in our smaller cottage, Hafan. This year its the turn of Bryn Llys to have a little makeover and specifically the main living area – dining room and lounge.
We did give the dining room a makeover back in 2020 when we painted the old wood stained ceiling 7 beams and installed new lighting….it certainly made a difference making the room feel lighter and brighter. The one ‘niggle’ has always been the central pillars that have prevented a large table setup and hampered the flexibility of the space. It was always the plan to move it at some point but given these posts support the living room upstairs it needed to be done carefully. So after a year of planning, engineering and navigating the required building regulations we were ready to go!
The plan was to move the central post and create a new post for the staircase. As result we have opened up the space providing a more flexible room and allowing for a large feature table at sometime in the future.
Upstairs in the lounge we have removed the old false fire place and installed an original slate lintel ready for a new wood stove soon. Dealing with old buildings is always fun but never easy! and we had a few surprises on the way! Once the hole in the roof is fixed properly we will be adding the wood burner ready for the winter. We added a new carpet and completely redecorated…its a lovely cosy space now!
We also took the opportunity to refresh the staircase, lounge and the games room. Plus….just for good measure we have also given the laundry and the cloakroom a make over with a new floor and new sanitary furniture. There is still a few finishing touches to add but the hard work is done and guests are already enjoying the new look…come and see for yourself!
